Police have sought to keep Jamaat leader and former lawmaker, freedom fighter Major (retd.) Akhtaruzzaman in jail until the investigation is completed in a case filed over alleged obstruction of government duties and misconduct with officials at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
Akhtaruzzaman was produced before a Dhaka metropolitan court on Sunday (October 4) after completing a one-day remand. Investigation officer SI Majedul Islam of Airport Police Station submitted the petition seeking his detention in jail until the investigation is concluded.
The hearing on the detention plea is underway before Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam. The court had earlier granted police a one-day remand for Akhtaruzzaman in the same case.
Meanwhile, lawyers representing Akhtaruzzaman have sought bail and are present in court for the hearing.
The case was filed following an incident at Shahjalal International Airport on Thursday (October 1), reportedly triggered by a shortage of luggage trolleys. The First Information Report alleges that Akhtaruzzaman engaged in an argument with airport Executive Director Group Captain SM Ragib Samad and threatened him.
The FIR also contains allegations of misconduct and physical assault involving a security officer after Akhtaruzzaman was allegedly stopped from recording video in a restricted area. Other allegations include throwing a bottle of Zamzam water and acting aggressively toward a representative of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.
Akhtaruzzaman was arrested by Detective Branch police from his residence in the Cantonment area of Dhaka on Friday (October 2). He was subsequently shown arrested in the airport police case. The allegations remain under investigation.
