Argentina produced a commanding attacking display at Buenos Aires’ iconic Estadio Monumental, defeating Burkina Faso 7-0 in an international friendly on Sunday (October 4).
The three-time world champions took complete control of the match from the opening minutes and scored five goals before halftime. They added two more after the break to seal a comprehensive victory.
Argentina opened the scoring in the fourth minute after winning a penalty. Lautaro Martinez saw his initial effort saved by goalkeeper Abdoul Guelra, but he reacted quickly to score from the rebound.
Burkina Faso’s defensive problems continued moments later when Moumouni Diallo accidentally put the ball into his own net, giving Argentina a 2-0 lead.
The hosts added a third goal in the eighth minute, with young forward Gianluca Prestianni finishing clinically after receiving a pass from Lautaro Martinez.
Argentina continued to dominate possession and create chances. Nico Paz added the fourth goal in the 35th minute before Julian Alvarez made it 5-0 shortly before halftime following a pass from Prestianni.
With the result virtually settled, Lionel Scaloni made several changes after the interval to give other players an opportunity. Argentina nevertheless maintained their attacking momentum.
Franco Mastantuono scored the sixth goal in the 57th minute following a well-worked team move. In stoppage time, Giuliano Simeone headed home Argentina’s seventh goal to complete the 7-0 rout.
The result extended Argentina’s impressive recent run, with the team winning 16 of their last 17 matches across all competitions. They have also scored 11 goals in their last two games.
For Burkina Faso, the defeat continued a difficult spell. The African side have failed to score in six of their last seven defeats.
