Spain secured a 3–1 victory over the Czech Republic in the UEFA Nations League, but much of the attention was focused on young star Lamine Yamal. The Barcelona forward scored early in the match and achieved a rare feat in international football.

Yamal put Spain ahead in just the sixth minute. He had also scored within the opening six minutes against England and Croatia, meaning he has now found the net inside the first six minutes in three consecutive international matches.

According to football statistics account ‘Mister Chip’, the feat had not been achieved since the 2017–18 period. Kyrgyzstan international Anton Zemlianukhin previously scored within the opening six minutes in three consecutive international matches.

Between December 2017 and March 2018, Zemlianukhin scored in the first minute against Brunei, the fifth minute against Myanmar and the second minute against India.

Yamal’s previous goals in this sequence also came extremely early. He scored in the second minute against both England and Croatia before finding the net in the sixth minute against the Czech Republic.

For the young Spanish forward, the latest goal was therefore more than just an early breakthrough. It also placed his name alongside a rare statistical achievement in international football.
