Not yet 20, Barcelona’s Spanish winger Lamine Yamal has already surpassed Kylian Mbappe’s goal tally in the UEFA Champions League among players before reaching that age. His goal against Aston Villa made him the competition’s leading scorer among players who have yet to turn 20.
Barcelona defeated Aston Villa 3-0 at Spotify Camp Nou on Tuesday night. Yamal opened the scoring in the seventh minute, before Raphinha scored twice in the second half to secure a convincing victory for Hansi Flick’s side.
Yamal capitalised on a defensive mistake by Aston Villa early in the match. After receiving the ball, he beat goalkeeper Zion Suzuki with a superb left-footed finish. The goal took his Champions League tally to 14.
Before Yamal’s achievement, Mbappe held the record with 13 Champions League goals before turning 20. Yamal surpassed that mark in just 37 appearances. Mbappe, who now plays for Real Madrid, has scored 72 goals in the competition overall.
This is not Yamal’s first Champions League record. He also holds the distinction of being the youngest player to start a match in the competition. He achieved that feat against Porto in 2023 at the age of 16 years and 83 days.
Yamal also holds records as the youngest player to score and provide an assist in a single Champions League match. He became the youngest goalscorer in the competition’s semi-final history as well.
The young winger scored five Champions League goals before turning 18. His tally had reached 11 before his 19th birthday, giving him further age-related records in the competition.
