India star batter Virat Kohli has added another record to his name in One-Day International cricket. He has surpassed legendary Sachin Tendulkar to become the highest run-scorer in the second innings of ODI run chases. In the same match, Kohli also drew level with former Australia captain Ricky Ponting for the most runs against New Zealand in the format.
Kohli produced a brilliant innings of 74 off 51 balls in the first match of the five-match ODI series against New Zealand on Thursday. His knock, featuring 13 fours and a six, brought India close to victory in a rain-affected match.
With this innings, Kohli became the leading run-scorer in the second innings of ODI run chases. The record had previously belonged to Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 8,720 runs in 232 second-innings appearances, including 17 centuries and 52 half-centuries.
Kohli has now moved past Tendulkar in just 169 innings. He has scored 8,741 runs in ODI run chases, with 30 centuries and 46 half-centuries. He now has the opportunity to become the first batter to reach 9,000 runs in the second innings of an ODI.
Apart from Kohli and Tendulkar, no other batter has scored even 7,000 runs in the second innings of ODI run chases. Former India captain Rohit Sharma is third on the list, with 6,801 runs in 163 innings, including 19 centuries and 40 half-centuries.
Kohli has also drawn level with Ponting for the highest number of ODI runs against New Zealand. Ponting scored 1,971 runs in 50 innings against the Black Caps, registering six centuries and 12 half-centuries.
Kohli has reached the same tally in just 37 innings against New Zealand. He has scored seven centuries and 11 half-centuries during that period, matching Ponting's record in considerably fewer innings
