Director Kiran Rao believes that changing social realities have transformed the way people experience love, relationships and emotional expression. According to her, young people today are more comfortable expressing their feelings and attractions than previous generations.

Speaking during the promotional campaign for ‘Last Stories 3’, Kiran shared her views on the changing nature of relationships among young people. Rather than describing the new generation as casual about love, she prefers to see them as more independent and open in expressing themselves.

Kiran said that young people today enjoy greater freedom compared with earlier generations. She also noted that society itself has changed significantly, and these changes are reflected through the stories being told in contemporary cinema.

She also highlighted a particular aspect of modern relationships: two people may feel attracted to each other without wanting to define their connection through a conventional relationship label. Such situations, she suggested, can lead to uncertainty, complications and unexpected developments.

According to Kiran, when two young people are attracted to each other but are not formally in a relationship, the decisions they make afterwards can take their lives in unexpected directions. She sees this uncertainty as one of the interesting elements of contemporary relationship stories.

Comparing modern relationships with those of her generation, Kiran said society once had much more defined expectations about what constituted an acceptable relationship. Premarital physical intimacy was generally not socially accepted, while emotional involvement with someone outside marriage was also viewed differently.

Kiran believes these changes should not simply be judged through older moral standards. Instead, they can also be understood as part of broader social evolution. Through her work, she aims to explore the changing language of love, personal freedom, attraction and the uncertainty surrounding modern relationships.
